Hard to read, hard
to remember.

Refined for simplicity, clarity,
and long-term recognition.

Doesn’t hold up next
to competitors.

Making sure a new logo does not resemble someone else

A logo can be well drawn, well liked and still unusable. The usual reason is resemblance. Somewhere, another business in a nearby field already uses a mark with the same shape, the same initials in a similar arrangement, or the same simple symbol. Finding this after launch is expensive. Signs, packaging and vehicles have to be redone, and a legal letter may arrive before any of that.

Similarity checks belong inside the design process, not at the end. The first check comes before sketching begins. The designer collects the marks of direct competitors and of companies in adjacent categories. This board shows which ideas are already taken, so concepts can avoid them from the start. It also saves the painful moment of falling in love with a direction that has to be dropped.

The second check happens when there are two or three candidate concepts. Each one goes through a reverse image search and a search in the public trademark databases, using the design codes that describe its figurative elements. Most offices classify images by what they show: a circle, a leaf, a stylised letter. Searching those codes within the relevant classes of goods and services is slow, but it finds marks that a word search never would.

Simple marks need the most care. A single letter in a circle, a check mark, a rising arrow, a leaf. These shapes are easy to draw and easy to remember, and that is exactly why thousands of companies have them. The simpler the concept, the more likely it overlaps with something registered. A small, distinctive twist often solves it. A cut in an unexpected place. An unusual angle. A proportion no one else uses.

Resemblance is judged by overall impression, not by counting differences. Changing the colour or flipping the shape rarely helps if the two marks still feel alike at a glance. A good test is to show both marks to someone for a second or two, then ask which one they saw. If they hesitate, the marks are too close.

The field of business matters as much as the drawing. Two similar marks may coexist when one sells software and the other sells bakery goods. The same pair in the same category is a real problem. This is why the search has to include the classes where the company trades now and where it plans to trade soon.

A designer can run the practical searches and flag obvious conflicts. The final clearance opinion should come from a trademark attorney, especially before filing for registration or printing large quantities. Their fee is small compared with a forced redesign.

Timing matters as well. Run the checks again just before the final files are delivered, because new marks are filed every day and the picture can change during a long project. A mark that was clear at the concept stage may have a close neighbour two months later. The second pass takes an hour and closes that gap.

Keep a record of the search. Note what was checked, when, and what came up. If a dispute ever arises, that file shows the mark was created in good faith and independently.

None of this should make a team timid. Distinctive marks are still possible in crowded fields. Most concepts pass with minor changes. The point is to find the overlap while the logo is still a sketch and a fix costs an afternoon.

Why doesn’t the logo feel right — even though
it’s technically fine?
Because it solves a graphic problem, not a brand one.
It was made to look good in isolation — not to live in real spaces, alongside real content. It floats. It doesn’t anchor. It doesn’t carry meaning.
You don’t need a prettier mark. You need a logo
that behaves like a decision — not decoration.

What goes into logo design?

Built to represent
A logo isn't an accessory — it's the first thing people remember. Great ones don't need explaining.
Context-aware form
Symbol-first thinking
Crafted for real-world use
Decks, socials, app icons, signs - good logo should flex without falling apart.
Multi-surface clarity
Tested across scales
Designed to last
Trends fade fast. What matters is clarity, relevance,
and restraint. Timelessness comes from strong structure.
Thoughtful categories
Smart listing
Rooted in your brand's philosophy
Before any sketches, there's research. A strong logo reflects positioning, and taste follows from it.

Why should Glendale companies invest in custom logo design rather than using logo generators or templates?

A logo is the most concentrated expression of brand identity — and Glendale's sophisticated audience (creative industry professionals, Fortune 500 corporate buyers, diverse community members with cultural brand sensibilities) recognizes template logos immediately. Custom logos are legally defensible, technically robust, and strategically aligned with positioning.

What is Toimi's logo design process for Glendale clients?

We follow a structured process: discovery, exploration (diverse directional concepts), refinement (narrowing to 2-3 directions), finalization (perfecting the chosen direction), delivery (comprehensive file formats, usage guidelines, source files).

How many logo concepts does Toimi present to Glendale clients?

Our standard engagement presents 3-5 distinct strategic directions in initial exploration, then develops 2-3 through detailed refinement, then finalizes one through iterative polish.

What file formats and applications does Toimi deliver for Glendale logo projects?

We deliver comprehensive file packages: vector formats (SVG, AI, PDF, EPS), raster formats (PNG, JPG) at multiple sizes, monochrome versions, horizontal and vertical lockups, favicon and app icon adaptations, social media profile optimizations, print-ready versions. For Glendale clients in diverse communities, we provide variants supporting multiple script systems where relevant.

How does Toimi ensure a Glendale client's logo works across all modern applications?

Logos face more application demands than ever. We design logos with these applications in mind from the start: forms reading at tiny sizes, adaptable lockups, weight variations. Testing happens throughout the design process.

How does Toimi handle typography in Glendale logo design — custom wordmarks or system fonts?

Approach depends on strategy. Custom wordmarks create maximum distinctiveness and trademark defensibility. Typeset logos deliver professional quality more economically. For Glendale clients with multilingual needs (Armenian, Korean, Spanish wordmark variants), custom wordmark development requires typography expertise across scripts.

Does Toimi handle trademark considerations for Glendale logo design?

We design with trademark considerations in mind — avoiding potentially conflicting marks through initial searches. Formal trademark clearance requires IP counsel — LA has excellent trademark attorneys we recommend.

What is the typical timeline and investment for a logo project for a Glendale company?

Logo projects typically run 6-10 weeks for Glendale clients.
