Keeping a customer informed between checkout and delivery

The sale is not finished when the payment clears. An order still has to travel from a warehouse to a doorstep. Somewhere in between, a customer moves through a stretch of the experience the storefront rarely designs on purpose: the status page, the shipping email, the moment a delivery date turns out to be wrong.

Left alone, this stretch defaults to whatever the fulfilment platform provides out of the box. Often that is a bare tracking number and little else. That gap is where a large share of support tickets originate. Not from products going wrong. From customers who simply do not know where an order stands.

A status page that actually helps shows more than a carrier link. It shows an expected delivery window. It shows what has shipped and what is still pending on a split order. It offers a way to reach a person if something looks off. Together these reduce the volume of where is my order emails a support inbox receives during a busy week.

Timing of notifications matters as much as their content. One email confirms the order the moment payment clears. A second arrives when it ships. A third lands close to the delivery date. These cover the points where a customer actually wonders what is happening. Notifications bunched right after purchase, then silence until arrival, leave the middle of the wait unexplained.

Exceptions need a plan of their own. A delayed shipment. A partial fulfilment. An address that turns out to be wrong. Each of these is common enough that improvising a response the first time it happens is a mistake. A short, honest message sent as soon as a delay is known keeps a support inbox calmer than silence followed by an apology after a customer complains.

Design has a role here too. The tracking page and the shipping emails can carry the same visual identity as the storefront. Or they can read like an afterthought bolted onto a shipping carrier template. A customer who lands on a generic tracking page after browsing a carefully designed store notices the drop in quality, even without being able to say exactly why.

None of this replaces reliable fulfilment. But a fast delivery still feels slower to a customer left guessing about it. A delayed one feels far worse without a message explaining why. The communication layer between checkout and delivery is a small piece of the build. It carries a disproportionate share of how the whole purchase gets remembered.

I already have a website — so why build a store?
Because being online isn't the same as actually selling.
An eCommerce site helps customers buy — and helps your business grow. Cart, payments, logistics, funnel — everything works toward results.
Speed decides the sale. A slow first screen on a phone loses the order to the next tab.

Shops whose year is decided by a few weeks

Back to school, a festival, a holiday range, an enrolment window. A shop like this does most of its trading inside a short period, which means every ordinary weakness — slow pages, thin stock data, a fragile checkout — arrives all at once and in front of the largest audience it will have.

Get the catalogue ready before the season, not during it
New ranges loaded, images in place, prices confirmed, old items retired. Catalogue work during a peak competes with fulfilment for the same people, and fulfilment always wins. A cut-off date for content changes is worth agreeing in advance.
  • Content freeze agreed before the peak
  • New range loaded and checked early
  • Retired items removed rather than hidden
Make stock figures trustworthy under pressure
Selling the same item across a shop, a marketplace and a phone order is where overselling starts. Reservation rules, a defined sync interval and a plan for when the stock system is slow keep the promises the shop makes.
  • Reservation point chosen deliberately
  • Sync interval matched to sales pace
  • Oversell path defined, not improvised
Keep the checkout simple when traffic triples
Extra steps, upsells and surveys cost more during a peak than at any other time. A checkout stripped to what the order needs converts better and gives support fewer things to explain when the queue is long.
  • Checkout steps counted and trimmed
  • Guest purchase available
  • Error states tested under load
Plan the quiet months too
A shop that costs the same to run in February as in September is a shop paying for capacity it does not use. Hosting that scales, and a content plan that keeps the site alive between peaks, are cheaper than a rebuild each year.
  • Hosting scaled to the season
  • Off-peak content plan agreed
  • Costs reviewed after each peak
