One source of truth for stock, or none at all
Selling in more than one place turns inventory from a number into a synchronisation problem. Every channel holds its own copy, every copy is slightly stale, and the gap is what produces an order you cannot fill.
So the first decision is which system is authoritative. Usually that is the warehouse system or the ERP, not the shop, because that is where physical movements are recorded. Everything else receives. A setup where two systems both believe they own stock will oversell, and no amount of polling frequency fixes it.
Latency then becomes the thing to design around rather than eliminate. Sync intervals, queue backlogs and marketplace processing delays all add up, and during that window the store is selling against a number that has already changed. Two mitigations do most of the work: a buffer on fast-moving lines, and a stock check at the moment of payment rather than only at add-to-basket.
Reservation is the piece that gets skipped. Stock committed to an unpaid basket or an unshipped order is not available, and treating it as available produces the same oversell from a different direction. Reservations need a timeout, and the timeout needs to be short enough to matter.
Returns close the loop badly if nobody designs them. A returned item is neither sold nor sellable until someone inspects it, and putting it back automatically on receipt creates phantom availability. The states have to be distinct: in transit, received, inspected, restocked, written off.
Marketplaces add their own rules. Each has its own tolerance for cancelled orders, and repeated cancellations affect standing in ways that outlast the missing stock. That makes the buffer on marketplace listings a commercial decision rather than a technical one.
What we report after this work: oversells per period, average sync delay by channel, the count of items sitting in an undefined return state, and cancellations by cause. The last column is what tells you whether the problem is data or the warehouse.

How much does it cost to build an online store in Chicago?
Scope drives the number more than anything else — a template-based store for a single product line costs a fraction of a custom platform with its own filtering logic, several integrations, and a design nobody else is running. We break the estimate down by feature so you can see exactly what's driving the price before you commit.
What’s included in eCommerce development?
The baseline covers design, the product catalog, cart, checkout, and payment integration. Past that, most Chicago clients add on a CRM or ERP connection, analytics, warehouse management, or delivery-service integration — whichever ones actually match how the business already operates.
How long does it take to launch an online store?
A lean, template-driven store can go live in a matter of weeks; a full platform with custom integrations and a unique design runs closer to a few months. Either way, we lay out milestones and testing windows before the build starts, not after something slips.
Can you integrate an online store with external systems?
That's one of the more common requests. We connect Chicago stores to CRMs, ERPs, payment gateways, delivery services, and marketplaces — the goal is that an order placed on the site shows up correctly in every other system without someone re-entering it by hand.
What happens after launch?
Launch isn't where the relationship ends. We run functionality checks, train whoever will manage the admin panel day to day, and stay on for updates, SEO work, analytics review, and feature additions as the store grows.
Can new features be added later?
They can, and most stores end up adding at least one. Loyalty programs, subscription options, customer accounts, and more advanced marketing tools all bolt onto the same platform once the business is ready for them.
How do you ensure eCommerce security?
SSL, data encryption, and secure payment processing are the baseline on every store we deliver. For healthcare or finance clients specifically, we build in the compliance requirements — HIPAA, CCPA — from the start rather than retrofitting them later.
Do you work with small businesses and startups?
Regularly — anywhere from an MVP store built to test whether an idea sells at all, up to a full platform for a small or mid-size business entering a new market.
Can you migrate an existing store to a new platform?
We handle migrations from outdated CMSs and custom-built platforms alike, with the priority on keeping product data, order history, and customer accounts intact and the store offline for as little time as possible during the switch.
Which industries in Chicago do you serve for eCommerce?
Retail, B2B sales, fashion, electronics, food delivery, healthcare, and professional services are the industries most Chicago eCommerce briefs come from — each one carries its own compliance and catalog quirks, so the store gets designed around those instead of a generic template.
