Where an accessible shop and a working cart meet

Accessibility work on a shop concentrates in the places that also decide revenue. That is convenient, and it is the reason to start there rather than with a sitewide sweep.

The cart and checkout come first. Every form field needs a label a screen reader announces, not a placeholder that disappears on focus. Every error needs to be announced when it happens, attached to the field that caused it, and readable without colour. A checkout that fails silently for one input method fails commercially for that group.

Keyboard operation is the next pass, and it is testable in minutes. Tab through the whole purchase path. Every control should be reachable, the focus should be visible, and the order should follow the page. Modal dialogs are the usual break: focus escapes behind them, and the only way out is the mouse.

Product pages carry their own set. Images need alternative text that describes the product rather than repeating the title. Variant selectors need to announce what changed when a colour is chosen. Price and availability updates that happen without a page load need to reach assistive technology too.

Contrast and text sizing are the cheapest fixes and the most often skipped. Both are measurable, and both affect far more people than the label suggests.

A caution worth stating plainly. An automated scanner finds a portion of the issues and certifies nothing. Manual testing with a keyboard and a screen reader finds the rest. And whether a given site meets a given legal standard is a question for counsel, not for a plugin badge.

What we produce: an audit of the purchase path against the published success criteria, the fixes ranked by how many people they affect, and a re-test of the same path afterwards.

I already have a website — so why build a store?
Because being online isn't the same as actually selling.
An eCommerce site helps customers buy — and helps your business grow. Cart, payments, logistics, funnel — everything works toward results.
Speed is part of usability. A slow page is unusable for somebody on a limited connection.

Let’s chat

Accessibility is a purchasing requirement, not a nicety

Organisations that buy with public money are usually required to check that a supplier's site can be used by everyone. The question arrives as a document, late in the process, and a shop that cannot answer it loses the contract regardless of price. Building for it costs little; retrofitting it costs a rebuild of the checkout.

Make the buying path work without a mouse
Every step from catalogue to confirmation reachable by keyboard, in a sensible order, with focus visible at all times. Checkout is where this fails most often: custom dropdowns, modal dialogs and card fields built without it in mind.
  • Keyboard path tested end to end
  • Focus order and visibility checked
  • Custom controls replaced or fixed
Write the catalogue so a screen reader can read it
Product names that make sense out of context, image descriptions that describe the product, tables with real headers, and error messages that say what to fix rather than that something is wrong.
  • Image descriptions written per product
  • Form errors announced properly
  • Headings used for structure, not size
Design within the contrast and size rules
Colour combinations checked rather than assumed, text that survives being enlarged, targets big enough to hit on a phone, and no information carried by colour alone. These are constraints on the palette, which is why they arrive at design time.
  • Contrast verified across the palette
  • Layout tested at larger text sizes
  • Status shown by more than colour
Keep the answer current
Conformance decays with every new landing page and third-party widget. A short checklist applied before publishing, plus a documented statement of what conforms and what does not, is what makes the next questionnaire an afternoon rather than a project.
  • Pre-publish checklist in use
  • Third-party widgets assessed
  • Written statement kept up to date
