Most WordPress work is not a new build. It is a site somebody else made, three vendors ago. Each of them layered changes on top. The first job is finding where those changes live.
There are only a few possible answers. In a child theme, which is the tidy one. In the parent theme, edited directly, which means the next update erases the work.
