Packaging Design Services in Pasadena, California: challenges we solve

Built to print.
Ready to ship.

It’s not enough for packaging
to look good on a render.
We make sure your design holds up in every size, substrate, and retail environment — folded, sealed, stacked, or unboxed. From flat dieline to final shipment, nothing gets lost in translation.

The box looks great.
The roll-out doesn’t.

Without real specs, designs break in production and scaling.

No structure, no control,
no consistency.

Brand integrity slips when every supplier adds their own tweaks.

People don’t get
what you’re selling.

If it’s not clear fast,
it doesn’t convert.

It fades into the shelf.
Nothing stands out.

No contrast, no cues —
nothing grabs attention.

Designing a range so the fifth product still fits

Most packaging starts with one product. Then a second flavour arrives. Then a larger size, a gift set, a seasonal edition. By the fifth item the shelf looks like five different companies.

The fix is to design the system before the first box. Decide what stays fixed across the range and what is allowed to change. Usually the logo position, the type hierarchy and the structure of the front panel stay fixed. Colour and imagery carry the variation.

Colour needs a plan with room in it. Picking the first three variant colours is easy. The seventh is where ranges break, because the obvious choices are gone and the new one clashes. Map the palette for more variants than exist today.

Naming interacts with layout. A variant name that is four letters on one pack and twenty on the next will push the design around. Set a length the layout can hold and test the longest real name early.

Sizes change the proportions. A layout that works on a tall bottle may not survive a short tin. Design on the most awkward format first. If it holds there, the easy formats follow.

Keep a master file with rules written beside it. Which elements scale. Which stay the same size. Where the regulatory text sits. A new designer, or a printer, should be able to produce the next variant without guessing.

Photograph the range together, not one pack at a time. Buyers see products in rows. A family that reads clearly in a row sells better than a set of individually strong packs that fight each other.

Review the system each time the range grows. Small exceptions accumulate. One year of special cases can undo the consistency the range was built on.

Printing adds its own constraints. Different substrates shift colour, and a range printed at two suppliers can drift apart on the shelf. Agree colour targets with each printer, approve physical proofs side by side, and keep the approved samples for the next run.

Why does the packaging still feel off — even with a brand book?
Because if no one’s using it, it might as well not exist.
Your dielines are outdated. The color specs shift between suppliers. The mockup looks great — but the print run doesn’t match. That’s not a system. That’s decoration.
A working packaging system reflects how you actually produce, on the line and on the shelf.

What goes into packaging design?

Built for the shelf — not the deck
Packaging must survive shipping, storage, and shopper handling. We design with structure and logistics.

Proven in production
It’s not a win if it only works in mockups. We check that designs hold up in real runs.
No surprise errors

Your best design is useless if it can’t be repeated. We build flexible packaging systems that work across SKUs.
Version control
Format families

What kinds of Pasadena brands benefit from professional packaging design?

Any physical consumer product benefits from strategic packaging. Pasadena specifically has specialty consumer, wellness, and D2C sectors where packaging drives outsized business impact: specialty food and beverage brands (including products serving San Gabriel Valley's diverse Asian American market), wellness and personal care products, consumer technology packaging, specialty retail products sold through Whole Foods and Pasadena specialty retailers, direct-to-consumer brands.

What does Toimi's packaging design process include for Pasadena clients?

Our packaging process includes brand and product strategy alignment, category and competitive analysis, packaging architecture (primary, secondary, shipping packaging), packaging design (structure and graphics), technical specification (material selection, print specifications, die lines, compliance considerations), mockup creation for stakeholder review, production file delivery with vendor coordination.

How does Toimi balance distinctiveness with category conventions in packaging design?

Retail shelves reward a mix of conformity (shoppers quickly recognize the category) and differentiation (your specific brand stands out). We help Pasadena clients understand their category's visual codes, then make strategic decisions about where to conform and where to differentiate. The best packaging feels distinctively on-category.

Does Toimi handle packaging for e-commerce direct-to-consumer Pasadena brands differently than retail packaging?

Yes — e-commerce packaging serves different functions. For retail, packaging must stop shoppers, communicate value at a glance, survive shipping from warehouse to store. For e-commerce, packaging must survive individual shipping damage, deliver unboxing experiences driving social sharing, minimize shipping weight and volume, communicate brand upon arrival.

How does Toimi handle sustainability in packaging design for Pasadena clients?

California's packaging regulations (SB 343 on recyclability claims, extended producer responsibility regulations) make sustainability central to packaging. We help Pasadena clients navigate material choices, size optimization, recyclability design, compostability where appropriate, compliant sustainability claims.

Can Toimi handle packaging across product lines for Pasadena brands with multiple SKUs?

Yes — multi-SKU packaging systems require architectural thinking beyond individual package design. We develop packaging systems maintaining brand coherence across products, using clear differentiation mechanisms, scaling efficiently as product lines expand, accommodating production economics.

How does Toimi coordinate with packaging production vendors for Pasadena clients?

We work with packaging production partners across LA and beyond, coordinating on technical feasibility, cost optimization, quality control, production scheduling. For Pasadena clients new to packaging, we recommend specific printers and structural engineers based on product category and volume requirements.

What is the typical timeline for packaging design projects for Pasadena brands?

Packaging projects typically run 8-14 weeks for Pasadena clients: 2 weeks of strategy and category research, 3-4 weeks of design development, 2-3 weeks of refinement and mockup testing, 2-3 weeks of production preparation, coordination with print vendors through production.
