API Development in Newton: challenges we solve

Built to connect, extend and adapt.
Performance is the baseline.

Our development team crafts custom APIs as evolving interfaces — aligning with your product logic, structuring data flow, and creating a resilient backbone that grows with your system.

Too many steps, too much friction.

API-driven triggers enhancing automation - no workarounds.

Disconnected systems cause conflicting data.

Shared endpoints keep everything aligned.

Stale data leads to bad decisions.

Real-time fetch, push, and sync keep systems updated instantly.

Deploying changes feels risky.

Versioned APIs make you upgrade safely and confidently.

Bulk endpoints for moving many records in a single call

Some integrations are naturally quiet, sending one record at a time as a form is submitted. Others need to move thousands of records at once, such as a nightly sync between a product catalog and a marketplace. Treating that case the same way, one request per record, turns a two-minute job into a slow crawl. It can time out halfway through.

A bulk endpoint accepts a batch of records in a single request and processes them together, returning a result for each one rather than a single pass or fail. That per-record result matters more than it sounds. If three records out of two thousand fail validation, the caller needs to know exactly which three. Knowing only that the batch failed helps nobody.

Designing the failure behavior is the hard part. Some operations should be all or nothing. They roll back the whole batch if any record fails, which suits financial or inventory data where a partial write leaves two systems disagreeing. Others should process what they can and report the rest, which suits a large catalog import where one bad row should not block the other rows.

Very large batches often need an asynchronous pattern instead of holding a connection open. The caller submits the batch and receives a job reference right away. It then polls a status endpoint, or waits for a webhook when the work finishes. The initial request stays fast. This avoids the timeouts that plague synchronous bulk calls at scale.

Idempotency still applies inside a batch. It is easy to overlook. A client may resend the same batch after a network failure, unsure whether it already landed. Duplicates can follow. Duplicate records or duplicate charges can appear, unless each item carries its own identifier that the server can use to skip work already done.

Limits protect both sides. A sensible maximum batch size keeps a single request from overwhelming the server. Documenting that limit clearly, along with the expected processing time per record, lets an integrator plan a sync job properly, instead of discovering the ceiling through a failed request in production.

So... APIs just connect stuff, right?
That's one part — the easiest one.
A real API enforces behavior — it knows what to do, when to say no, and how to keep things running when the unexpected hits.
An integration is a living contract between systems: logic, decisions and structure wrapped in an interface.

What powers real APIs

Input becomes behavior
Each request hits a defined path — mapped, filtered, and shaped before it runs.
Schema-first logic
Flow mapping
Access with structure
Who can see it, and what happens next. Rules shape response as much as layout.
Role logic
State-aware routing
Up-to-date without polling
Systems push updates as they happen. The UI just knows — no refresh required.
Reactive sync
Event listeners
Built to handle tomorrow
Add new logic, not new risks. Updates land cleanly, without breaking what works.
Decoupled layers
Version resilience

What API development opportunities exist in Newton?

Newton API opportunities span healthcare integration APIs (Newton-Wellesley affiliated practices require integration with hospital systems, EHR platforms, and substantial healthcare infrastructure), professional services integration APIs (Newton firms require integration between practice management, CRM, billing, and substantial other enterprise systems), educational platform APIs (Newton educational services require integration between platform components and external educational infrastructure), partner integration APIs supporting Newton organizations' substantial partnership relationships, and platform APIs for Newton organizations exposing capabilities to customers and partners.

What API development expertise does Toimi bring to Newton projects?

Our API practice covers comprehensive API development across REST, GraphQL, and gRPC patterns. We bring particular Newton sector context — healthcare API development accommodating HIPAA compliance and HL7 FHIR for healthcare interoperability, professional services API development accommodating professional standards and security requirements, educational API development accommodating educational platform integration, and enterprise API development accommodating substantial integration complexity.

How long does API development take for Newton organizations?

API timelines depend on scope. Focused API development for specific integration use cases runs 6-10 weeks. Standard API platforms with comprehensive endpoint scope and proper governance infrastructure run 10-18 weeks. Enterprise API platforms with substantial scope, multiple integration patterns, comprehensive security and governance, and substantive documentation run 5-9 months. Healthcare APIs with FHIR compliance and substantive integration run 4-9 months.

How does Toimi handle healthcare API for Newton-Wellesley affiliated practices?

Healthcare API requires specialized expertise. We engineer with HIPAA-compliant API architecture, HL7 FHIR support for healthcare interoperability (FHIR substantially primary for modern healthcare integration), proper PHI handling with comprehensive audit logging, integration with EHR systems (Epic, Cerner, athenahealth), proper authentication using OAuth 2.0 with healthcare-appropriate scopes, and substantive healthcare API governance supporting regulatory requirements.

How does Toimi handle API security for Newton enterprises?

API security substantially affects API success. We implement comprehensive security including OAuth 2.0 with proper scope management, API key management with proper rotation, rate limiting preventing abuse, input validation and proper error handling, audit logging supporting compliance requirements, encryption in transit and at rest, and substantive API security testing. For Newton healthcare and professional services APIs handling substantial confidential information, additional security measures accommodate regulatory and professional standards.

How does Toimi handle API documentation for Newton organizations?

API documentation substantially affects API adoption. We develop comprehensive documentation including OpenAPI/Swagger specifications supporting automated documentation generation, interactive API exploration tools (Swagger UI, Postman collections, custom API explorers), comprehensive code examples across major languages supporting integration partner adoption, integration guides supporting common integration patterns, and substantive developer support infrastructure.

How does Toimi handle API versioning for Newton organizations?

API versioning substantially affects API lifecycle management. We implement appropriate versioning strategy (URI versioning, header versioning, or content negotiation depending on requirements), deprecation policy supporting graceful version transitions, comprehensive change communication supporting integration partners, backwards compatibility support where possible minimizing integration partner disruption, and substantive ongoing API lifecycle management.

What ongoing API support does Toimi provide for Newton organizations?

APIs require continuous substantial operations. We provide ongoing support including performance monitoring with substantive API analytics, security monitoring and incident response, integration partner support, API evolution supporting changing requirements, version lifecycle management, and substantive ongoing API operations supporting Newton organizational API programs.
