Websites for organisations that take donations

A charity, a school foundation or a community group needs a site that does several jobs at once. It explains the cause, reports on what money achieved and collects new donations. The donation part is where technical choices meet trust most directly.

Keep the donation page short and focused. One clear heading, a few preset amounts, an option to enter a different figure, and a choice between one off and monthly giving. Every extra field loses donors. Ask only for what the payment and the receipt require, plus consent for future contact.

Preset amounts work better with meaning attached. A line saying that a given sum covers a school kit or a week of meals works, provided it is true and the organisation can stand behind it. The link between money and outcome should be honest and general enough to survive changes in cost.

Monthly giving needs extra care. Donors must see clearly that they are signing up for a recurring payment, how to change the amount and how to cancel. A self service page for managing the gift saves staff time and prevents chargebacks from people who forgot.

Receipts carry weight for donors who claim tax relief. The receipt should state the name of the organisation, its registration details, the amount and the date. Decide whether the payment provider, the donor database or the site sends it, and make sure only one of them does.

The donor database is usually the centre of the system. Donations made on the site should flow into it with the source, the campaign and any dedication, such as a gift made in memory of somebody. Manual export and import every week invites mistakes.

Campaigns come and go. A fundraising appeal may need its own page, a progress bar and a closing date. Build the donation form so it can be reused with different settings for each campaign rather than copied. Copies drift apart and break separately.

Transparency pages matter as much as the form. Annual reports, accounts and stories of results give donors reasons to trust. Keep these easy to find and up to date. An outdated report suggests an organisation that is not paying attention.

Gift aid, matching gifts from employers and dedications add small fields that change the paperwork behind a donation. Include them only where the organisation can process them, and check that each one reaches the donor database in a usable form rather than as a free text note that nobody reads.

Finally, remember that many donors are older and give on a phone. Large text, simple steps and support for quick payment methods help. Test the whole flow with a real card and a real phone before the first appeal goes out.

The footer, and what visitors go looking for at the bottom

The footer is often designed last and read more than expected. Visitors scroll to the bottom when they cannot find something in the menu. They look for contact details, legal pages, job openings and a way to reach support. A footer that answers those needs reduces frustration across the whole site.

Start by listing what people actually look for. Search logs, support emails and heatmaps show it. The usual items are an address, a phone number, an email, social profiles, the privacy policy and terms, careers, and sometimes a sitemap or a newsletter sign up. Rank them and keep the important ones visible.

Group the links into a few clear columns. Company, Help, Legal, for example. Plain column names beat clever ones. A column titled Resources can mean anything. Support and documentation says more.

Do not turn the footer into a dump. Long lists of links added for search reasons make it hard to scan and look spammy. Every link should serve a person who might click it. If nobody would, remove it.

Contact details deserve special care. The phone number should be tappable on phones. The address should match the one in business profiles and structured data. If the organisation has several locations, link to a locations page rather than listing every branch in small type.

Legal content lives here by convention. Privacy notice, terms, cookie settings, accessibility statement. The cookie settings link is easy to forget and often required, since visitors need a way to change their consent later. Place it clearly.

Newsletter forms in footers are common and often neglected. If the form is there, it must work, confirm the sign up and connect to the right list. A broken footer form collects addresses into nowhere for months before anybody notices.

The footer is shared by every page, so it affects performance and accessibility everywhere. Keep it light, with no heavy scripts or large images. Use proper headings and a landmark role so screen reader users can jump to it. Check colour contrast, since grey text on a dark background is a classic failure.

On phones the footer needs its own layout. Five columns side by side become a long stack of links, and visitors may give up before reaching the contact details. Collapsible groups or a shorter mobile version, with the most requested items at the top, keep the bottom of the page useful on small screens.

Test every footer link after each release, since it appears on all pages at once.

Finally, keep the copyright year and company details current. Small stale details at the bottom of the page make visitors wonder what else is out of date.

Web fonts, loading order and the flash of the wrong text

A brand typeface is often the first thing a design team wants on a new site. It is also a common cause of slow pages and jumping layouts. How fonts are chosen, served and loaded affects every visitor on every page.

Start by counting the files. Each weight and style is a separate download: regular, bold, italic, perhaps a light and a semibold. A design that uses six variants makes the browser fetch six files before the text looks right. Reduce the set to what the layout truly needs. Two or three weights are usually enough.

Variable fonts can help. One file can contain a whole range of weights, which is lighter than several static files when many weights are used. When only two are needed, static files may still be smaller. Compare the actual sizes rather than assuming.

Host fonts on the same domain when the licence allows. Loading them from a third party adds a connection, a privacy question and a dependency on another service. Self hosting also allows long caching and control over the files.

Subsetting reduces size further. A font that includes every alphabet and symbol is much larger than one limited to the characters the site uses. Be careful with multilingual sites, though. Removing characters needed by another language produces missing letters.

Loading behaviour matters most for the visitor. While a font downloads, the browser can hide the text or show a fallback font first. Hidden text looks like a blank page on a slow connection. Showing the fallback first is usually better, with the brand font swapping in when ready.

That swap causes its own problem: text reflows and the layout shifts. Choose a fallback font with similar proportions and adjust its size and spacing so the change is barely visible. Modern CSS allows this adjustment directly. The page then settles without jumping under the reader.

Preload only the fonts used in the first screen, usually one or two files. Preloading everything competes with images and scripts and slows the page overall.

Icon fonts deserve a separate note. Older sites often load an entire icon font to show a handful of symbols, and when that file fails the icons turn into empty squares or random letters. Replacing them with small inline graphics removes a download and makes the icons more reliable for screen readers as well.

Finally, test on a slow connection and an older phone. What looks instant on an office network can show a long blank or a jarring shift elsewhere. Fonts are part of the brand, and so is a page that appears calmly and quickly.

Why do I even need a website?
For starters, because people judge a company by its website.
And because a good website sells — it turns visitors into enquiries.
But it has to load fast: visitors leave a slow page before it opens.
