Hover, focus, pressed and disabled states for every control
A static mockup shows each button in one condition. A real site shows it in at least five. Default, hover, keyboard focus, pressed and disabled all need a design, and loading or success often needs one too. When those states are missing from the design files, developers invent them, and the result rarely matches the rest of the site.
Hover is the state designers remember. Focus is the one they forget. People who use a keyboard, and many who use assistive technology, rely on a visible focus ring to know where they are on the page. Removing the browser default without a replacement leaves them lost. A custom focus style should be clearly visible on every background the site uses.
Pressed states give feedback. A slight change in colour or position tells the visitor that the click registered. Without it, people click twice, and a form can submit two times.
Disabled controls need thought. A greyed-out button that gives no reason is frustrating. Often it is better to keep the button active and explain what is missing when it is pressed. If a control must be disabled, the reason should appear nearby.
Links need states as well. Text links in body copy should look different from surrounding text before the pointer reaches them. Underlines or a distinct colour do that job; a change on hover alone does not. Touch screens have no hover at all, so the default state must already say this is clickable.
Specify all of this once, in a component sheet, and apply it everywhere. Buttons, links, tabs, checkboxes and menu items should follow one logic. Test each state with a mouse, a keyboard and a phone before the design is signed off.
Documenting states also saves money later. When a new page or feature is added, the team picks existing components with their states already solved. Nobody has to decide again what a focused tab looks like. The site stays consistent after launch, and reviews go faster because the rules are already agreed.
