Technical SEO
& performance audit
in Pasadena, California

avatar Toimi
A multi-location dental group running the same page template across five San Gabriel Valley offices, a Caltech-adjacent research-tools vendor whose product pages never finish rendering for Google's crawler, an Old Town Pasadena retailer whose site duplicates itself across three URL variants of the same product — technical debt like this doesn't show up in a content audit, it shows up in Search Console as pages that should rank and don't.

What the crawler sees is not what you see

A page built in the browser and a page delivered to a crawler can differ substantially, and the difference is invisible until someone looks at the delivered version.

The mechanism is straightforward. Content assembled by script after the page loads has to be executed before it exists. Search engines do execute script, in a second pass, and that pass is neither immediate nor guaranteed to reproduce what a person with a fast connection sees.

So the first check is the served source. Fetch the page the way a crawler does, without executing anything, and look for the things that matter: the main copy, the headings, the internal links, the structured data. Anything missing from that response depends on a later pass.

Common findings. Product or listing content that only appears after a request finishes. Internal links attached to elements that only become links once script runs, which means the crawler never follows them. Content behind an interaction, where a tab or an accordion loads its contents on click rather than hiding them in the document. Structured data injected by a tag manager rather than emitted by the page.

The fix is not always rendering everything on the server. The question is narrower: which parts must be present in the first response. Main copy, headings, internal links and structured data belong there. Interface behaviour, personalisation and anything that depends on who is looking do not.

Links deserve a specific note. A crawler follows an anchor with an address in it. An element that navigates through script is not that, no matter how it behaves for a person. On sites where navigation is built this way, whole sections are unreachable, and the sitemap hides the problem by listing pages nothing links to.

What we test and report: main content present in the served response, internal links present as real anchors, structured data present and valid without script, and behaviour on a throttled connection. Then the same set after the change, so the difference is a measurement rather than an assurance.

Mobile-first indexing and what the phone version drops

For teams in Pasadena, California, technical SEO begins at ~$600 (audit plus fixes) and goes up to ~$1,500 for the complete setup. Expect three to five weeks for a focused audit and its fix plan, the range this page gives. Mobile parity is among the first checks. The phone version is the one Google indexes.

Google crawls and indexes with a smartphone user agent. Whatever the mobile page leaves out does not count for ranking, even if the desktop page shows it.

Responsive sites mostly pass. Both devices get the same HTML and CSS rearranges it. Content inside collapsed tabs counts as long as it sits in the document.

Parity breaks when the server or a script sends different markup by device. Common findings. A mobile template that trims long copy to a teaser. Breadcrumbs and related-item blocks removed to save space. Structured data present on desktop only. Images swapped for smaller files with no alt text. A separate m-dot site whose pages lack the title of their desktop pair.

Lazy loading is the other gap. Sections that load on a scroll event may never load for Googlebot. It renders with a tall viewport and does not scroll.

Navigation deserves its own look. A hamburger menu whose links load only on tap means the mobile page carries far fewer internal links than desktop. Google sees the thinner graph. Keep menu links in the HTML and let CSS hide them.

Directives must match too. A noindex or canonical set on the m-dot version and missing on desktop, or the reverse, splits the pair in a way that is hard to diagnose from one side.

Tooling changed. Search Console retired its Mobile Usability report and the Mobile-Friendly Test at the end of 2023. We run these checks with Lighthouse and a real mid-range phone. A full-screen popup that covers the content right after a visitor arrives from search is one more thing we flag.

We compare both versions on sample URLs from each template. Word count, headings, internal links, structured data, alt text, meta tags. Each difference goes into the report with the component that causes it.

Why isn't our site ranking higher even after a redesign?
Because a new layout sitting on top of the same broken foundation is still broken underneath.
A Pasadena firm can ship a beautiful new homepage and still lose ground if its product pages carry render-blocking scripts, its sitemap lists URLs that 404, or its internal linking buries the pages that should be ranking three clicks deep.
Google reads the structure underneath the design, not the design itself.

What is technical SEO and why does it matter for Pasadena websites?

Technical SEO covers the engineering side of search — how fast a page loads, whether Google can actually crawl and index it, whether the structured data behind it is correct. A San Gabriel Valley business can publish genuinely good content and still underperform if the site itself is the bottleneck; fixing that foundation is what lets the content and link-building work afterward actually compound into ranking gains instead of getting absorbed by a slow, confusing site.

What technical SEO services does Toimi provide to Pasadena clients?

The work spans Core Web Vitals tuning, crawlability and indexability fixes, structured data implementation, sitemap and robots.txt configuration, mobile-first optimization, and — for React or Vue-built sites, common among Pasadena's tech-adjacent companies — the JavaScript rendering fixes that let Google actually see content a plain crawler would miss.

How does Toimi handle Core Web Vitals optimization for Pasadena websites?

Largest Contentful Paint usually comes down to image weight and server response time; Cumulative Layout Shift traces back to images or ads loading without a reserved size, shifting content around mid-load; Interaction to Next Paint means trimming whatever JavaScript is blocking the page from responding to a click. Each of the three gets diagnosed and fixed separately — they rarely share a single root cause.

How does Toimi handle technical SEO for Pasadena JavaScript-heavy sites?

Google has to execute JavaScript before it can index what's inside it, and that step fails more often than site owners realize. Depending on the framework, the fix might be server-side rendering, a static-generation build, or a hybrid approach for pages that need to stay dynamic — then testing directly with Google's own rendering tool to confirm the content that matters is actually visible to the crawler as well as to a human visitor.

How does Toimi handle structured data implementation for Pasadena clients?

The right schema depends on what the page actually is — product schema for an e-commerce catalog, article schema for a blog, local business schema for a Pasadena storefront with a physical address customers need directions to. Getting the schema type wrong is common and mostly harmless; getting the required fields wrong is what keeps a page out of the rich results it should qualify for.

Can Toimi handle international and multilingual SEO for Pasadena companies with global operations?

It's a common need among Pasadena companies selling beyond Southern California. The technical side covers hreflang tags across language and region variants, deciding between country-code domains, subdirectories, or subdomains, and setting geographic targeting correctly in Search Console — details easy to get subtly wrong in a way that quietly splits ranking signal between language versions instead of concentrating it.

How does Toimi handle technical SEO audits for Pasadena clients?

Crawl tools surface the volume — broken links, missing tags, duplicate content — and manual review sorts that volume by what actually matters: a handful of critical issues blocking indexing entirely, a longer list with real but smaller ranking impact, and lower-priority items worth fixing eventually but not urgently. Without that triage, a two-hundred-item crawl report is just noise.

What is the typical timeline and investment for technical SEO engagements for Pasadena clients?

A focused audit with a remediation plan usually wraps in three to five weeks. A full technical SEO overhaul — audit plus the actual implementation — tends to run two to four months depending on how much needs fixing and how large the site is. Beyond that, most clients shift to ongoing technical monitoring as part of a retainer, since new issues surface every time a plugin updates or a developer ships a change.
