Images carry more of the page than the markup suggests

Images are usually the largest thing a page sends. They are also the part least often reviewed. How fast a page feels is decided there, and speed is both a ranking input and the reason people stay.

Start with dimensions. A huge photograph poured into a small slot wastes the visitor's data and delays everything below it. Generate sizes. Declare width and height, so the layout stops jumping while the page loads. Pick a modern format with a fallback.

Lazy loading helps below the fold and hurts above it. The main image on the screen at load should never be deferred, because deferring it is the single most common cause of a slow largest paint. Load it eagerly and defer the rest.

Alt text is where most sites are weakest. It exists so that a person who cannot see the image still gets the information it carries. Describe what is in the frame and why it is on the page. Skip decorative images entirely with an empty attribute, rather than filling them with the company name.

File names and surrounding text still matter for image search. That search sends real traffic to product and portfolio pages. A descriptive file name, a caption where one is natural, and a paragraph nearby on the same subject do more than any attribute alone.

Finally, audit what the page actually loads. Icon sprites, tracking pixels and background images set in CSS are invisible in the content editor and easy to forget. Open the network panel, sort by size, and start at the top.

Set a budget and hold it. Decide what the page is allowed to weigh. Measure on a slow connection. A page that passes on office wifi can still be unusable on a phone in a car park, and that is where a good share of the traffic reads it.

Four page directives that can contradict each other

For Los Angeles companies, we take existing pages and fix what keeps them from ranking or converting: markup, copy, headings, links and the signals in the page head. On-page fixes are priced from ~$550, while the large-site tier with custom setup runs about $2,300. How long it takes is set in the estimate after a look at the site.

The head of a page can carry several instructions at once. A robots meta tag. A canonical link. Sometimes an X-Robots-Tag header sent by the server, invisible in the HTML. Plus whatever robots.txt says about that path. Different people set them at different times, and nothing forces them to agree.

Most conflicts come from a short list. A page marked noindex that also declares a canonical to another URL sends two opposing messages. A canonical can point at an address that redirects or returns 404. Worst is a page blocked in robots.txt that also carries noindex. The crawler cannot fetch the page, so it never reads the noindex, and the URL can still show in results with no description.

Plugins cause much of it. An SEO plugin writes one canonical, the theme writes a second, and the page ships with two. When they disagree, Google may ignore both. A staging setting copied to production can leave noindex on a whole template for months.

Our check reads what the live server sends for each URL: status code, response headers, robots meta, canonical, and the robots.txt verdict for the path. Then it compares them. A self-referencing canonical on an indexable page returning 200 is the normal case. Anything else needs a written reason next to it.

Search Console shows the other side. The URL Inspection tool lists the canonical Google chose beside the one the page declared. When they differ, the declared one lost. The question becomes which signal outweighed it: internal links, redirects, sitemap entries or a near-identical page.

Sitemaps belong in the same audit. A sitemap should list only URLs that return 200, are indexable and canonical to themselves. A noindexed or redirected URL in the sitemap is one more contradiction, and Search Console reports it.

Nofollow on internal links is a related habit. Adding it to links toward login or cart pages does not keep those pages out of the index. Noindex does that. For a staging site, password protection is the dependable guard.

Fixes go in at template or server level. Then the whole set is re-read, because a directive set in one place tends to have a twin somewhere else.

Why do our pages show up in search, but never climb higher?
Because signals aren’t clear.
Headings are misused — search engines can’t read structure.
Images are untagged — context is missing.

Links point randomly — authority gets lost.
If on-page SEO is ignored, rankings stay stuck.

What does on-page SEO optimization cost in Los Angeles?

For entertainment companies in Burbank or tech startups in Silicon Beach, we often see 50-200 page sites requiring comprehensive work. The investment reflects LA's competitive digital landscape — industries like production studios, fashion brands, and SaaS companies need strategic optimization to rank locally and nationally.

How long does on-page SEO take to show results in LA markets?

Most Los Angeles businesses see initial ranking improvements within 6-12 weeks after optimization launches. However, competitive verticals like real estate in West Hollywood or legal services downtown may take 3-4 months to break into top positions. We prioritize quick wins first — fixing technical issues, optimizing high-traffic pages, and improving site speed. For LA's mobile-heavy audience (over 70% of searches happen on mobile here), mobile optimization often delivers the fastest visibility gains.

Which Los Angeles industries benefit most from on-page SEO?

Entertainment production companies, fashion and apparel brands, hospitality groups, legal practices, healthcare providers, and tech startups see exceptional returns from on-page SEO in LA. The Westside tech corridor from Santa Monica to Playa Vista has particularly high demand. We've optimized sites for Melrose Avenue boutiques, Century City law firms, and DTLA restaurants — each requiring different keyword strategies. LA's diverse economy means nearly every sector competes online, making strategic on-page optimization essential for local visibility.

What specific on-page elements do you optimize?

We optimize title tags, meta descriptions, header tags (H1-H6), URL structures, internal linking architecture, image alt text, and schema markup. Content receives keyword optimization without sacrificing readability — crucial for engaging LA's sophisticated audiences. Technical elements include page speed improvements, mobile responsiveness fixes, and Core Web Vitals optimization. We also refine navigation structures and implement breadcrumb schemas. For LA businesses targeting multiple neighborhoods or services, we create location-specific optimization strategies that improve relevance without keyword stuffing.

How does on-page SEO differ from off-page SEO?

On-page SEO involves everything you control directly on your website — content, HTML elements, site architecture, and user experience. Off-page SEO focuses on external signals like backlinks and brand mentions. Think of on-page as building a strong foundation for your LA business's digital presence. We optimize what search engines see when they crawl your site and what users experience when they land on your pages. For competitive LA markets, on-page optimization ensures your site deserves to rank before investing heavily in link building or other off-page tactics.

Can you optimize existing content or do we need rewrites?

We typically enhance existing content rather than complete rewrites, especially if your current copy reflects your brand voice and expertise. Strategic improvements include adding relevant keywords naturally, improving header hierarchies, inserting internal links, and expanding thin content. For LA businesses with established content libraries, this approach preserves what's working while fixing gaps. However, outdated or poorly performing pages may need fresh content. We audit everything first, then recommend whether to optimize, rewrite, or consolidate pages based on performance data and search intent analysis.

How do you communicate progress during optimization?

You'll receive a detailed audit report within the first week identifying all optimization opportunities. We use a shared project dashboard showing completed tasks, ranking changes, and traffic metrics updated weekly. Bi-weekly calls review progress and adjust strategy based on results. All changes are documented with before/after comparisons. You'll have direct access to your project manager via Slack or email — no waiting for responses. For time-sensitive needs common in LA's fast-paced business environment, we accommodate urgent requests and expedited reviews when necessary.

What support do you provide after initial optimization?

Initial optimization includes 30 days of monitoring and minor adjustments to ensure everything performs as expected. We track rankings, fix any unforeseen issues, and provide guidance on maintaining optimization standards. Many clients continue with monthly retainers for ongoing optimization as their content grows and search algorithms evolve. Post-launch support includes answering questions about content updates, reviewing new pages before publication, and providing recommendations when you expand services or locations. Our involvement continues past the initial project delivery.
