Anchor text, and why the obvious choice is usually wrong

Anchor text is the part of a link everybody wants to control and nobody fully can. The words belong to the publisher. What you influence is the suggestion and the page you point at.

The obvious instinct is to ask for the exact phrase you want to rank for, every time. It looks efficient. It also produces a profile that no naturally linked page has ever had, and that pattern is one of the oldest things search engines learned to notice.

Look at how real editorial links behave. Most are the brand name, the bare address, or something ordinary like read more here. A phrase that describes the topic appears, but it is a minority, and it varies in wording because different writers phrase it differently.

So the target is a spread rather than a number. Branded and naked links dominate. Descriptive phrases appear where they read naturally. Exact commercial phrases are the rarest.

There is a second reason to relax about this. A link from a genuinely relevant page carries the topic in its surroundings regardless of the anchor. The paragraph, the heading above it and the subject of the page all say what the link is about.

Where you do have real control is the internal graph. Every anchor inside your own site is yours to choose. That is the cheapest place to be precise, and most sites waste it on the words click here and learn more.

The page you point at matters more than the words. A link aimed at the home page has to travel before it helps anything. Aimed at the page that answers the query, it works immediately.

Images need attention too, because their alternative text is their anchor. A linked logo with empty alternative text is a link with nothing to say.

We record the anchor of every placement as part of the report, so the spread can be looked at rather than assumed. Nobody notices a skewed profile while it is forming. It is obvious afterwards, in a spreadsheet, when the same six words appear forty times.

Links need something worth linking to

A link campaign aimed at a page that sells a service has a structural problem. Nobody links to a sales page. Editors link to something their reader will find useful, and a price list is not that.

So the first question is what on the site deserves a link at all. If the honest answer is nothing, the campaign is going to consist of asking people for favours, and that is the expensive way to do this.

What earns links is usually one of a few shapes. Original data from your own operations. A tool that does a calculation people otherwise do by hand. A reference document that is more complete than anything else available. A clear explanation of something commonly misunderstood.

Original data is the strongest of the four and the most overlooked. Most companies sit on numbers nobody outside has: typical lead times, failure rates, price movement, what a category actually costs. Published carefully, with the method stated, that becomes the thing other people cite.

Carefully is the operative word. Numbers published without a method get quoted wrongly and then argued with.

A calculator works because it saves labour. It also keeps working for years, which is what separates an asset from a campaign.

The reference document is the least glamorous and the most reliable. A page that answers a narrow question completely, updated when it changes, collects links slowly and indefinitely.

Then the internal question that decides whether any of this pays. An asset that earns links helps the commercial page only if the two are connected, so the linking asset and the service it supports need to sit close together and point at each other.

The awkward truth is that this takes longer than outreach and costs less per link. We say so at the start, because a programme sold as monthly placements and delivered as asset building is a disappointment even when it works.

Why do we publish great content, but no one links to it?
Because it’s not about content alone — it’s about discoverability.
Editors don’t find it, anchors don’t connect it, and outreach misses the mark.
So the content stays invisible, even if it’s brilliant.
Without strategic link-building, authority never compounds — and rankings don’t rise.
