Choosing a backend for a mobile app: managed service or custom API
Almost every mobile app needs a server side. User accounts, stored data, push notifications, payments and content all live somewhere other than the phone. Early in a project, the team must decide whether to build that backend from scratch or rely on a managed platform that provides most of these pieces ready made.
Managed backends are attractive at the start. Authentication, a database, file storage, notifications and analytics come configured and connected. A small team can launch a working product in weeks, without hiring server specialists or managing infrastructure. For prototypes and early versions this speed is often decisive.
The trade-offs appear later. Pricing is usually based on usage, which is cheap at small scale and can grow sharply with success. Data models are shaped by the platform, and complex queries or reports may be awkward. Business logic spread across client code and platform rules becomes hard to test and maintain.
Dependency is the main long-term risk. If the platform changes its pricing, limits a feature or shuts down, moving away requires rewriting large parts of the app. Before committing, the team should know how data can be exported and how much of the code is tied to the platform.
A custom API gives full control. The team designs the data model, the business rules and the security to fit the product exactly. Costs follow infrastructure rather than per-user pricing, and the same backend can serve the mobile app, a website and partner integrations. The price is more work at the beginning and ongoing responsibility for updates, monitoring and security.
Many projects combine the two. A managed service handles authentication or push notifications, where it is mature and cheap, while a custom API holds the core business logic and data. This keeps the parts that define the product under the control of the team.
Offline behaviour influences the choice. Apps that must work without a connection need a way to store data locally and synchronise it later, resolving conflicts when the same record changed in two places. Some managed platforms handle this well. With a custom backend, synchronisation must be designed deliberately.
Regulation can decide the matter. Health, finance and data about children may require data to stay in a particular region, be encrypted in specific ways or be auditable. Not every managed platform offers the necessary controls, and checking this before the first line of code saves a painful migration.
Versioning is easier to forget on mobile than on the web. Old app versions stay installed for months, calling the backend in the ways they were built to. Whatever the choice, the server side must keep supporting those older clients or give them a clear path to update.
Security needs the same care on both paths. Rules that protect data on a managed platform are easy to misconfigure, and a single open rule can expose every record. Custom APIs need proper authentication, input validation and rate limits. Neither option is secure by default.
The decision should be written down with its reasons. When the product grows, the team can revisit it knowingly, instead of discovering the constraints in the middle of a crisis.
Cost estimates should cover the whole life of the app, beyond the first release. A managed platform that looks cheap for the first thousand users may become the largest line in the budget at one hundred thousand. A custom backend that looks expensive to build may cost little to run. Modelling both options at several realistic sizes before choosing avoids unpleasant surprises when growth finally arrives.
Monitoring completes the setup. Whatever powers the backend, the team needs alerts for errors, slow responses and failed background jobs, so that problems are noticed before users start leaving reviews about them.
Team skills should weigh in the choice. A backend built in a language and framework nobody on the team knows well will be slow to change and risky to maintain. Picking tools that current developers can support, or that the market can easily supply, is part of the architecture decision, even though it never appears on a diagram.
