Disavow decisions, and why most profiles never need one

The disavow file comes up early in most conversations about links. Someone has seen a report full of unfamiliar domains and wants them removed. The honest answer disappoints people: the majority of profiles are better left alone.

Search engines have spent years learning to ignore links rather than punish the sites receiving them. A link from a scraped directory usually carries no weight in either direction. Disavowing it changes nothing. Meanwhile the file itself is a blunt instrument, and a mistake in it removes value that was working.

So the first step is establishing whether there is a problem at all. That means looking for a pattern, and not a list. Sudden volume from one network. Anchor text that repeats a commercial phrase far more often than a normal profile would. Links placed in the same template position across hundreds of unrelated sites. A profile that grew faster than the site published anything.

Absent a pattern like that, the unfamiliar domains are usually just the internet being untidy. Aggregators. Scrapers. Lists somebody generated. They accumulate on every site that has been around for a while.

There is one situation where the file earns its place. A site with a history of paid placements, or one that inherited a profile from a previous owner, carries specific risk. Here the work is careful and slow. Identify the campaigns. Try removal at the source first, because a removed link is cleaner than a disavowed one. Disavow only what could not be removed, and keep a record of the reasoning for each entry.

Domain-level entries deserve particular caution. Disavowing a whole domain is convenient and irreversible in effect. If that domain also carries an editorial mention from years ago, it goes too.

We also advise against treating the file as maintenance. Some teams add to it monthly, as a habit. Over years the list grows, nobody remembers why a given line is there, and the file becomes a liability that no one is willing to review.

The better use of the same hours is upstream. Fewer placements, chosen more carefully, on sites where a human editor decided to publish. That profile never raises the question, because there is nothing in it to be nervous about.

Outreach that does not read like outreach

Most outreach fails in the first line. The recipient has seen the shape of the message hundreds of times, and recognition arrives before the content does.

Volume is what created that. Tools made it trivial to send a thousand near-identical notes, so a thousand near-identical notes now arrive at every editor and site owner worth contacting.

The response is not a cleverer template. It is fewer messages with something specific in them. Name the piece you read and say what was useful about it, then say what you are offering and why it fits that particular publication.

Specificity has to be real. A merge field that inserts an article title produces a sentence that is technically personal and obviously automated. Editors can tell, because the observation never goes past the headline.

Keep the request small and clear. What you want, what you are giving, how long it will take. Messages that circle the point for four paragraphs get closed.

Subject lines carry more weight than the body, because most messages are judged and dismissed there. Describe the contents plainly. Curiosity gaps and false urgency both burn the address.

Follow up once, or twice at most with proper spacing. A third message converts almost nothing and costs the relationship with somebody you may want to approach again next year.

Track refusals as carefully as acceptances. A site that has declined twice for the same reason should come off the list, and the reason should shape what gets offered next time. Most programmes only record wins, which is why they keep repeating the same approach.

Why do we publish great content, but no one links to it?
Because it’s not about content alone — it’s about discoverability.
Editors don’t find it, anchors don’t connect it, and outreach misses the mark.
So the content stays invisible, even if it’s brilliant.
Without strategic link-building, authority never compounds — and rankings don’t rise.
