A page that used to rank and stopped

Traffic to a page falls away. The usual reaction is to rewrite it. That is sometimes right and often premature, because five different causes produce the same graph.

First check whether anything moved at all. A page can lose visits while holding its position, because the number of people searching has fallen. Seasonal terms do this every year. Rewriting a page in response to a season has no possible effect.

Second: did the results page change shape rather than the ranking? A term that now shows a map, a shopping row or a long answer at the top pushes ordinary results down the screen without moving them in the list. The remedy is a different format. Not a better paragraph.

Third: has the meaning shifted? Terms drift toward comparison, toward local intent or toward buying, and a page written for the old meaning slowly stops matching. That is visible in what else the search engine chooses to show.

Fourth: are you competing with yourself? Two or three pages covering the same ground split the signals and each one underperforms what a single page would do. This is the most common finding and the cheapest to fix, because merging beats writing.

Fifth: did something technical happen quietly? A redirect added during a redesign, an internal link removed from a menu, a slower page, a change of address. These have dates, and dates can be matched against the fall.

Only after those five is rewriting the answer, and then the question is what is missing rather than how to say it better. Usually it is a section that competing pages all have and this one does not.

Check the page against what it looked like when it worked. Removals during a redesign are the forgotten cause, and the old version is usually still archived somewhere.

The discipline is to name the cause before doing the work. A rewrite that fixes a technical problem by accident teaches nobody anything, and the same fall will happen again next year.

Topics where a wrong sentence costs the reader

For Glendale companies that need search content written, edited and kept accurate, we plan topics, write new pages and repair live ones. An optimised article starts near $150, a content plan with copywriting runs about $600, and a full content strategy is around $1,500. The timeline goes into the estimate once we have seen the site.

Some pages can afford a loose sentence. A page about dosage, a tax deadline or a loan term cannot. Google's quality rater guidelines call these topics Your Money or Your Life. Pages on them are held to a higher bar for accuracy and for evidence of who stands behind the text.

The writing process changes for these pages. Every factual claim gets a source written next to it in the draft. A primary source where one exists: the regulator's page, the manufacturer's documentation, the standard itself. Secondary summaries drift. A figure copied from a blog that copied it from another blog is often two revisions out of date.

Numbers carry dates. A rate, a limit or a fee changes, and a page that states it without a date keeps stating it after it has changed. We write the date into the sentence. The reader then knows how old the fact is.

Tables of figures get a source line underneath, with the date the figures were taken.

Hedging needs care too. Legal and medical writing piles qualifiers until nothing is said. Readers stop trusting a page that commits to nothing. Say what is true in general, then name the exceptions plainly. One sentence each.

Plain words beat jargon here. A reader checking a deadline wants the date, the form and the consequence of missing it, in that order.

Put each condition next to the claim it limits. A fee that applies only to some accounts belongs in the same sentence as the fee, never three screens lower.

Corrections are handled in the open. When an error turns up, we fix it and add a dated note saying what changed. A silent edit on a money topic looks like a cover-up to anyone holding a screenshot.

Search engines do not check facts line by line. Readers do. So do the sites that might link to the page, and an error on these topics costs the citations first.

Advice has limits the page should state. A calculator gives an estimate. A checklist does not replace a professional who has seen the documents. Saying so once, in the right place, protects the reader and the publisher. A disclaimer pasted into every footer protects neither.

Review happens before publication and again on a schedule. For these topics we set a review date on every page, and a named specialist confirms the facts on that date. A page nobody has checked in two years is a liability in a field where the rules move.

Publishing original data others will cite

Most content repeats numbers from somewhere else. The page that holds the original number collects the citations. That is the whole case for original data. It works for small companies too.

The dataset can be modest. It has to be yours. Anonymised order volumes by month. Median response time on the support desk. A count of pre-sale questions grouped by theme. Fifty honest rows from real operations beat a panel survey of strangers.

Method goes on the page. What was counted, over which period, what was excluded, and why. Put it under the chart in plain sentences. An analyst or journalist decides in seconds whether a figure is safe to quote. The method paragraph is what they read.

Publish the table itself. A chart saved as an image cannot be quoted or checked. An HTML table can be copied, sorted and compared. Give every figure a date and add one line on how to cite the page.

Decide the refresh cycle before launch. An annual dataset released in the same month each year earns repeat citations, because writers return for the new figure. A one-off study earns a burst of attention, then fades.

Mind the conflict of interest. Data that flatters the publisher gets discounted by readers who know the field. Publish the finding that cuts against your own pitch. It is often the one that gets quoted.

Name the page after the thing measured, with the year. A clever headline hides the dataset from the searches that would find it.

Then tell the people who need it. Send the table to the few writers who cover the field, with the method paragraph in the email. No pitch deck. The numbers do the persuading.

Keep the raw file. When someone asks how a figure was derived, a reply within a day turns a sceptic into a repeat source.

Why isn’t our content ranking even after multiple updates?
Because updates alone don’t fix structural gaps.
Search engines need clear signals — hierarchy,
metadata, and keyword intent.
Most sites rewrite text but keep broken logic: missing headings, overused keywords, or thin internal linking.
That confuses crawlers and weakens ranking potential.
When content is rebuilt strategically rather than simply
rewritten — it strengthens both user experience
and search performance over time.
