A backup only counts once it has been restored

Almost every WordPress site has backups, but far fewer have ever restored one. The first real test usually happens during an incident, which is the worst possible time to discover a problem.

Common failures are predictable. The backup includes the database but not the uploads folder. The files are there but the database export is corrupted. The backup lives on the same server that just failed.

So restore on a schedule. Take a recent backup and bring it up on a separate environment. Check that pages load, images appear, forms submit and the admin area works. Write down how long it took.

That time matters. If a full restore takes six hours, the business should know that before an outage. It may change how often backups run, or where they are stored.

Store copies in more than one place. At least one copy should sit off the hosting account entirely. If the account is compromised or suspended, backups held inside it may be lost at the same time.

Match frequency to how the site changes. A brochure site edited monthly does not need hourly backups. A shop taking orders all day may need database backups much more often than files.

Keep enough history, because some problems are discovered late. A hacked file or a bad content change may go unnoticed for weeks, and the most recent backups will already contain it.

Finally, document the procedure: where the backups are, who has access and what the steps are. A restore that only one person knows how to do is a single point of failure, and incidents rarely wait for that person to be available.

Test restores after major changes as well. A new plugin that stores data in its own tables, a move to another host, or a change in the storage setup can all quietly break a backup routine that worked for years. One restore after each change is enough to catch it.

We cleaned it up. Why is WordPress still acting weird?
Because cleanup doesn’t equal correction.
You removed a plugin — but it rewired functions.

You switched themes — but left template overrides.
You cleared cache — but stored errors are still running.
Fixes don’t stick if the logic chain is still broken.
